Dunkin’ Donuts Coffee Shop by Ralph Goings, 1974

I remember when creamer came in a little stainless-steel jug and sugar came in a glass jar with a top that had a little metal flap. and you could take as many napkins as you needed and had a real coffee mug and a metal spoon.

Now the creamer is in little individual tubs and the sugar is in packets, and good luck finding a napkin.   The coffee is in a paper cup and the spoon is plastic, and throw it all away when you’re done.

It’s just not the same.

Looking at this makes me nostalgic, but that wasn’t the artist’s intent.  When he painted this in 1974, he was just painting what he saw.

I worked in a donut shop around that time. Hardest work I’ve ever done.

    • It always seemed unfair to me that tips are based on a percentage of an order. Whether you bring me a glass of Dom Perignon and a plate of caviar or a cup of coffee and a doughnut, the work is the same.
